What is
Kidney Disease?

Kidney disease is the general term for damage that reduces function of the kidney. It is estimated that kidney disease affects 1 in 10 people globally.

Our Kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, each one about the size of a fist, located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine. They regulate blood pressure, signal your body to make red blood cells, and help regulate growth in children. Healthy kidneys filter about 113 to 142 litres of blood to produce about one to just under 2 litres of urine, composed of waste products, drugs, and toxins everyday.

This website is the result of the Canadian Red Cross COVID-19 Emergency Support for Community Organizations Granting Program which is funded by the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund led by Employment and Social Development Canada. The African Kidney Health Society (in the process of being renamed the African Kidney Health Society (AKHS)) was successful with their submission in 2020 to this granting program.

Canadian Red Cross

The AKHS has entered into partnership with the Canadian Red Cross Society to create an organizational website to support the kidney health needs of people of African Ancestry living in Nova Scotia. The website will provide information on kidney disease/dialysis, associated diseases, nutrition and other necessary educational information. This website will also help to address any mis-information and associated fear and anxiety that may have arisen due to COVID- 19.

This website is to provide support to primarily persons with kidney disease and their associated developed disabilities, their caregivers and other family members within the Black community. The East Preston Non-Profit Society of Nova Scotia (in the process of being renamed the African Kidney Health Society (AKHS)) was successful with their submission in 2020 to this granting program.
